Queen of Flowers and Pearls: Telling History Through Stories

Event Overlay

Queen of Flowers and Pearls: Telling History Through Stories is an anti-colonial performance exploring resistance, memory and resilience in Ethiopia under fascist Italian occupation.

Through readings, monologues and songs, author Gabriella Ghermandi brings to life the story of Mahlet, a young protagonist journeying between Africa and Europe. As Mahlet shares the histories of Ethiopian freedom fighters, she also confronts the legacy of intergenerational trauma within her own family.

The event is presented by the Centre for Diaspora and Transnational Studies, the Department of Italian Studies, Spanish, Portuguese & Latin American Studies, and the African Studies Centre.
