Collaboratory for Black Poiēsis: Night Visions

Event Overlay

The Collaboratory for Black Poiēsis at the University of Toronto has launched Night Visions, a lightly recurring film series gathering community through Black cinematic imagination.

Join them for a screening of the cult classic The Wiz (1978), which will launch its 2025-2026 cycle, with more films to come in 2026.

A musical fantasy adventure directed by Sidney Lumet and adapted from the 1974 Broadway musical, The Wiz reimagines The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, following Dorothy Gale (Diana Ross) as she is transported from Harlem to the Land of Oz in search of the elusive Wiz (Richard Pryor). This foundational work of Black performance that found a life beyond commercial metrics, remains vibrant nearly fifty years on.

The Collaboratory for Black Poiēsis is a multidisciplinary experimental research and arts co-working hub, archival nexus, and creative studio that foregrounds Black Studies/black study and Black aesthetics for urgent social transformation.
