2025-2026 Black Studies Summer Seminar
The 2025-2026 Black Studies Summer Seminar, “the next place we go, they will follow: Beyond Digital Capture,” will take place at the University of Toronto Scarborough from May 25-29, 2026.
This year’s theme explores how technologies of surveillance, data extraction, and algorithmic reproduction attempt to enclose Black life within evolving systems of digital capture, while considering emerging strategies of resistance. Programming includes:
- Dr. Stanley H. Griffin (University of the West Indies) for “Creativity, Resistance, and Independence Through the Chase in Caribbean Culture” – Wednesday, May 27th at 3:15 pm (EDT)
- Seminar co-founder Dr. Mark V. Campbell will present “Remix as the B-side of Datafication” on site at the Goethe-Institute Toronto as a part of their “Call & Response” series – Wednesday, May 27 at 6:30 pm (EDT)
- Tambay A. Obenson (founder of Akoroko & African Film Press) will present on “Reporting, Researching, and Tool-Building Across African Film, TV and Digital Media Ecosystems” moderated by Dr. Nataleah Hunter-Young (University of Toronto) – Thursday, May 28 at 3:15 pm (EDT)
